The word “Hamas” in Arabic language means “enthusiasm”. As we will see, Hamas members pursue their dark goals with much enthusiasm indeed. But what are these goals? Who are these people? What do they want?

Let’s see.

The Definition.

So what is Hamas? To minimize the political biases, let’s turn to scholarly sources for definition.

Encyclopaedia Britannica:

Hamas – militant Palestinian Islamic movement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip that is dedicated to the destruction of Israel and the creation of an Islamic state in Palestine. Founded in 1987, amās opposed the 1993 peace accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

CSA knowledge base:

Hamas: A radical Islamic organization operating primarily in the Gaza Strip and West Bank whose goal is to establish an Islamic Palestinian state in place of Israel. Hamas operates openly through the delivery of social services, but its activists have also conducted many attacks, including suicide bombings, against Israeli civilians and military targets.

Wikipedia:

Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan, and the United States, and is banned in Jordan. Australia and the United Kingdom list only the military wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, as a terrorist organization.

The Goal.

The main and only goal of Hamas is to destroy the state of Israel and to create Islamic state in its place. The covenant of Hamas states:

The Islamic Resistance Movement is a distinguished Palestinian movement, whose allegiance is to Allah, and whose way of life is Islam. It strives to raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine.

Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.

This goal haven’t changed over years. Hamas leaders repeat it again and again.

Many interviews with different Hamas persons are combined in this YouTube video:

We say that all of Palestine, from the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterannean) sea, belongs to the Palestinians.

We cannot give up a single inch of it.

New York Times, December 2006:

Hamas leader said the group had no intention of recognizing Israel’s right to exist or changing its charter, which calls for Israel’s destruction.

This statement was made in the middle of peace negotiations with Israel. Inspiring, isn’t it?

Reuters, March 2007:

Hamas says still seeks Israel’s destruction.

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas rejected on Monday criticism by al Qaeda’s second-in-command and said it was still committed to Israel’s destruction despite a power-sharing deal with the Fatah faction.

“We will not betray promises we made to God to continue the path of Jihad and resistance until the liberation of Palestine, all of Palestine,” Hamas said in a statement, in a clear reference to Israel as well as to the occupied West Bank.

The Means

Hamas intends to reach its goal by jihad – the holy war on all infidels. Back to the covenant of Hamas:

…Palestine is an Islamic land… Since this is the case, the Liberation of Palestine is an individual duty for every Moslem wherever he may be.

The day the enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the individual duty of every Moslem. In the face of the Jews’ usurpation, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised.

Allah is its target, the Prophet is its model, the Koran its constitution: Jihad is its path and death for the sake of Allah is the loftiest of its wishes.

JihadWatch site in its “Islam 101” article, cites Hasan Al-Banna, the founder of Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas describes itself as a part of this organization, mainly based in Egypt.

Islam is concerned with the question of jihad and the drafting and the mobilisation of the entire Umma {the global Muslim community} into one body to defend the right cause with all its strength than any other ancient or modern system of living, whether religious or civil. The verses of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Muhammad (PBUH {Peace Be Unto Him}) are overflowing with all these noble ideals and they summon people in general (with the most eloquent expression and the clearest exposition) to jihad, to warfare, to the armed forces, and all means of land and sea fighting.

The ummah that knows how to die a noble and honourable death is granted an exalted life in this world and eternal felicity in the next. Degradation and dishonour are the results of the love of this world and the fear of death. Therefore prepare for jihad and be the lovers of death.

Let’s see these noble and honorable deaths. Let’s get a clear impression on what does jihad mean to us, the infidels.

And what does it mean to Israel, Hamas primary target?

Fox News, December 31 2008:

Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States and many other Western nations. From 2000 to 2004, Hamas was responsible for killing nearly 400 Israelis and wounding more than 2,000 in 425 attacks, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2001 through May 2008, Hamas launched more than 3,000 Qassam rockets and 2,500 mortar attacks against Israeli targets.

Hamas means of action, as we can clearly see, are: violence, bloodshed and martyrdom.

Peace Agreement Perspectives

As stated in the covenant of Hamas,

Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement.

These conferences are only ways of setting the infidels in the land of the Moslems as arbitraters. When did the infidels do justice to the believers?

There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.

In the video mentioned before (called, by the way, “Hamas and the stages of the destruction of Israel”), Hamas leaders state that they will never abandon their main cause, the destruction of Israel state, but they have plans to do it gradually, founding a state on every peace of land they can lay their hands on, but never accepting Israel’s right to exist.

The 6-month ceasefire of 2008 was used by Hamas to build troops and acquire weapons to continue the war. Even during the ceasefire, Hamas members constantly fired rockets towards Israeli cities. As they state by themselves, the only end of their war is the complete elimination of Israel.

So what are the perespectives of establishing peace in the Middle East? Is there any possibility of peace? In my opinion, there surely is one. But, obviously, Hamas is the wrong target.
